KUALA LUMPUR – Elections for six states will likely be held in August, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has predicted.
He told The Star in an interview in Penang that polls could be “as late as the second week of August”, or, at the latest, “five to six weeks” after the proposed dissolution of the state legislative assembly.
The chief minister is proposing dissolution on June 28 and has previously said he will meet Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on June 27 to seek permission for the dissolution.
Penang’s assembly will automatically expire on August 2.
While saying it is still up to the Election Commission to fix the polling date, “there’s a possibility it will be held in August”, Chow was quoted as saying by The Star.
The six states due to hold polls are three governed by Perikatan Nasional (Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu) and three under Pakatan Harapan (Penang, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan).
These states did not dissolve their assemblies simultaneously with Parliament for the 15th general election last November.
Chow, who is also Padang Kota assemblyman, told The Star he will defend his seat if his party leaders in DAP agree.
Selangor’s legislative assembly will automatically expire on June 25.
Kelantan’s is due to expire on June 27, and its Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said recently that it was preparing to dissolve the assembly this week.
Terengganu’s legislature is to expire on June 30, Kedah on July 3, and Negri Sembilan on July 1. – The Vibes, June 14, 2023
